See the world's smallest countries and territories! Monaco, Macau, San Marino, Gibraltar, The Vatican, and much more! Microstates is all about the world's smallest, internationally recognised, sovereign states and territories, they’re tiny - all under 6000 km2. and share a land border with another nation.
For the purposes of this exercise, these are not tiny single-island nations with maritime boundaries, or military bases, these places are enclaves or exclaves and all share a land border with another larger nation. We aim to visit each microstate and perhaps each territory and will summarise our experiences in our travel report.
There's something intriguing about how these little nations and territories came to exist, to all extents and purposes they appear as though they should be part of a much bigger host country, however through quirks of history, we have ended up with some interesting tiny nations and territories, dotted all around the globe!
